Summer Intern Perspectives: Devin Gerboth, Pfizer Oncology Intern
Published in December 2020
This summer I had the incredible privilege to work with Prime Therapeutics as one of the AMCP Foundation/Pfizer, Inc. Managed Care Oncology Summer Interns. I am very grateful for all the support that I received from everyone involved to make this unique virtual experience a success!
Through this internship, I was able to gain hands-on experience within managed care at a national pharmacy benefit manager. I learned about the considerations that go into payment of specialty and oncology medications, researched newly approved medications and regulations, and presented at a variety of meetings. One of the most valuable parts of this experience was being able to complete a research project that I presented at AMCP Nexus 2020 Virtual. During the process of this project, I learned about claims data and how research is conducted using this information.
I was also able to take part in a variety of sessions with Pfizer this summer to learn about the pharmaceutical industry. The weekly Pfizer sessions with the other interns was a fun way to learn about the different operations at Pfizer as well as learn what everyone else was doing. I really enjoyed all the 1-on-1 opportunities that I was able to set up with different team members at Pfizer to learn about their current position as well as their career paths. I really benefitted from the career advice that I received from everyone!
I am very grateful to all those that helped with this internship including Drs. Jeremy Whalen, Pat Gleason, and Kevin Bowen at Prime Therapeutics who made me feel welcome at the organization in the virtual setting as well as for all of their work in helping with the research project I presented at AMCP Nexus 2020 Virtual. I am also very thankful for Dr. Sarah Hanson and all her colleagues at Pfizer for the time they spent with me to talk about my project, my career interests, and Pfizer in general. I would also like to thank Dr. Kristen Tripicchio for her mentorship throughout the internship experience and for providing her insight into managed care. Lastly, I would like to thank Ebony Clay and everyone at the AMCP Foundation for making this internship possible and ensuring that everything ran smoothly.
This internship was a tremendous experience and was perfect to help me better understand managed care and the pharmaceutical industry as I start to apply for post-graduate opportunities!
