Josephine Tran is the Executive Director and Research Scientist at Lilly, where she applies her deep research expertise and payer experience to develop real-world evidence strategies, foster collaborative research initiatives with key stakeholders, and advance health policy research. Prior to joining Lilly, Josephine served as Health Outcomes Director on the Managed Markets team at Novo Nordisk. Her payer experience spans over a decade at UnitedHealth Group, where she navigated various roles and domains across the enterprise. She played a pivotal role in pioneering innovative drug payment models, such as outcomes-based contracts, for the commercial business, and spearheaded healthcare partnerships with start-up biotechnology companies and providers. Her expertise also encompasses conducting health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), culminating in her recent leadership role as Vice President, Part D Product, Innovation and Analytics at UnitedHealthcare. In this capacity, she played a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction and growth of the Medicare Part D portfolio, particularly in response to regulatory changes affecting Part D.
Prior to her tenure at UnitedHealth Group, Josephine's career led her to the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she conducted research to inform formulary decision-making processes and developed pharmacy utilization management programs.
Josephine's academic background includes earning her Pharmacy degree, Masters in Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy, and Certificate of Gerontology from the University of Southern California. She further enhanced her expertise through a post-doctoral HEOR fellowship with Amylin Pharmaceuticals, conducted in collaboration with the University of Southern California and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Josephine has presented her research at national and international conferences and has authored or co-authored 40+ publications.
Josephine is a 2007 AMCP Foundation and Pfizer Managed Care Intern who was previously featured in our intern alumni spotlight series. She is a top reviewer for the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy and a past member of AMCP’s Student Pharmacist Committee.
