Intern Perspectives: Marianna Calvet, AMCP Foundation/Pfizer Managed Care Internship
The AMCP Foundation/Pfizer Summer Managed Care Internship with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) has been a one-of-a-kind learning experience as I learned about managed care principles through the lens of a pharmaceutical company and, in my instance, an insurance company.
Being part of the Professional Engagement and Quality team within Blue Cross NC was enlightening as I was able to participate in various work-stream meetings with accountable care organizations and lead one as my ten weeks ended. I wanted to sincerely thank my Blue Cross NC preceptor Brenden O’Hara, Rph, BCACP, for not only being the most supportive preceptor I could have had as you helped develop my confidence within the field of managed care. I wanted to thank Spenser Smith, PharmD for the support as I designed my capstone research project and solidifying principles within research to help further my project. I also want to thank Nicole Abolins, PharmD and Tyler Gums, PharmD as they provided me with resources and support as I undertook this research project, providing refinement on solidifying the question we were asking for the capstone project. I am greatly excited in presenting my final project (Patient Outcomes and Preferences Regarding Hemophilia Treatment within a Commercially Insured Population: A Prospective Survey) at Nexus 2023 in Orlando, Florida.
Interns within the cohort had the opportunity in participating in, weekly journal clubs published within Journal of Managed Care + Specialty Pharmacy which were facilitated by Kenneth Garcia, PharmD, and Mei Huang, PharmD. My presentation analyzed prescription claims data of real-world opioid use among patients with migraine enrolled in US commercial insurance and risk factors associated with migraine progression. This was an exciting experience as this was my first experience leading a journal club, extremely grateful this was programmed within the internship so that I may use this skill within my Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences next year.
I wanted to say thank you as well to Ebony Clay, PMP for welcoming the intern class of 2023 with open arms into the AMCP Foundation and for organizing the internship for us. I will always cherish this opportunity in being a 2023 AMCP Foundation/Pfizer Summer Managed Care Intern with Blue Cross NC as it has helped with decision making for my future career. I am ecstatic to meet my preceptors and fellow interns at this upcoming Nexus!
