Intern Perspectives: Adil Hasan, AMCP Foundation/Pfizer, Inc. Managed Care Internship
This summer, I had the privilege of serving as an AMCP Foundation/Pfizer Managed Care Intern with VytlOne. Coming into the internship, I was already interested in managed care, market access, and the role pharmacists can play beyond traditional practice settings. Over the course of the summer, that interest developed into a much stronger understanding of how clinical evidence, real-world data, and collaboration can be used to improve care at a population level.
One of the most meaningful parts of my internship was the opportunity to work on a research project examining vaccination among adults with cancer. Using pharmacy claims data, I evaluated uptake of influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and pneumococcal vaccines among adults with breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer. I explored differences in vaccination across factors such as cancer type, age, gender, geographic region, and comorbidity burden. This experience challenged me to think beyond simply analyzing numbers and instead consider the patient and health-system factors that may contribute to gaps in preventive care.
Throughout the internship, I also gained exposure to the many functions that make managed care pharmacy possible. Working alongside professionals with different backgrounds helped me better understand how pharmacists, clinicians, analysts, and other stakeholders contribute their expertise to solving complex healthcare problems. I strengthened my skills in literature evaluation, data interpretation, scientific communication, and translating findings into insights that can be meaningful to decision makers.
I am especially excited that the work from my internship will continue beyond the summer. I will be presenting a poster on my research at AMCP Nexus 2026 in San Diego. Having the opportunity to contribute to a project from its early stages and ultimately share our findings with the broader managed care community has been one of the most rewarding parts of this experience.
Most importantly, I am incredibly grateful for the people who invested in my growth throughout the internship. I would especially like to thank my VytlOne preceptors, Cara Colodonato and Michelle Briscoe-Fields, and my Pfizer mentor, Tyler Gums, for their mentorship, guidance, and willingness to challenge me throughout the summer. I am also grateful to Anne Fentress, Ebony Clay, the AMCP Foundation, Pfizer, VytlOne, and everyone who contributed to making this experience possible.
This internship reinforced why I became interested in managed care in the first place. It showed me how pharmacists can combine clinical knowledge, data, and strategy to address challenges that affect entire patient populations. More than anything, I leave this experience with new skills, meaningful relationships, and an even stronger desire to continue building a career where I can contribute to improving access, outcomes, and the way healthcare is delivered.
