Summer Intern Perspectives: Aisha Fowler, Pfizer Oncology Intern
Published December 2020
The AMCP Foundation and Pfizer, Inc. summer internships have genuinely made an impression on my professional trajectory. This summer, I had the unique opportunity to work with Magellan Rx Management (Oncology Clinical Strategy & Innovation) and Pfizer's Organized Customers (Medical Affairs) to dive deep into its intriguing facets of oncology and managed care. I never imagined such an exhilarating partnership and experience. Both of my preceptors, Rebecca Borgert, PharmD, BCOP, senior director of Oncology Clinical Strategy & Innovation at Magellan Rx Management, and Sarah Hanson, MD, PhD, MBA, field medical director, Organized Customer at Pfizer, were incredibly supportive through each phase of the internship. It was just the right amount of autonomy, self-learning, and support to flourish and grow as a young professional!
A large part of my internship includes a capstone project to develop research skills, publishing experience, and create a poster presentation for AMCP Nexus 2020 Virtual. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore the biosimilar landscape in oncology treatment and employ real-world data to understand utilization, market share, and potential budget impact. Beyond my capstone, I worked with the Clinical & Strategy and Drug Information teams to develop drug monographs for newly launched oncology projects and identify potential cost savings. Pfizer, Inc. and the AMCP Foundation provided weekly experiences in oncology managed care and drug development topics. These presentations played a pivotal role in my growth and education to help understand the complex health care system and the intricacies in drug development, patient access, and managed care organizations.
Thank you to the many people who made this internship exceptional and one to remember.
