P&T Competition Celebrates 20 Years
Did you know the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy began organizing P&T Competitions in 1997? Read all about it in this “Campus” feature from Jul/Aug 2001 JMCP. The national competition began in 2000-01 with a case built on osteoprev (sinthicum), a fictional drug for the treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The first national finals were held at the AMCP Annual Meeting in Tampa, Fla.
Over the past two decades, our Annual National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Competition has introduced thousands of rising pharmacists to the profession of managed care pharmacy. 69 schools and colleges of pharmacy from across the country registered for this year’s P&T Competition, with lead sponsorship from Genentech. During the week of March 9, we will announce the top teams who will compete in Houston! Live finals will be held during AMCP 2020 on Tuesday, April 21.
While the program has notched two decades, it has evolved through the years. We continuously implement improvements so that the competition retains its relevance and attracts more participants. Last year, we rolled out a web-based portal that hosts school registration, national entry submission and judge evaluations in a more efficient manner.
“This competition offers the country’s brightest student pharmacists an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of managed care pharmacy principles and practices,” said Paula J. Eichenbrenner, MBA, CAE, Executive Director of the AMCP Foundation. “It is the most visible example of how we immerse student leaders in evidence-based formulary management.”
Each team presents a case study based on a pharmaceutical drug using a product dossier organized according to the AMCP Format for Formulary Submissions. Teams evaluate the scientific literature and assess the product’s value within its therapeutic class. Participants complete assignments including a monograph with recommendations for formulary placement and an oral presentation supporting their recommendations.
We are grateful to P&T Competition lead sponsor Genentech and partners Amgen, Supernus, and FormularyDecisions/AMCP eDossiers. We also thank Sanofi US Services, Inc., for use of the dossier for DUPIXENT® (dupilumab) injection for the 2020 competition. DUPIXENT is a registered trademark of Sanofi Biotechnology.
The year 2020 is a banner year for AMCP milestones! We’re also marking the 25th anniversary of AMCP’s Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy. The journal is publishing a series of articles that document the changes to the journal and profession over the past two and a half decades. Check out this month’s vintage rerun and contemporary reflection.
