Intern Perspectives: Albert Truong, AMCP Foundation/Genentech Evidence for Access Internship
As I reflect on my internship with the AMCP Foundation/Genentech Inc. in the field of Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR), I can't help but feel a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This experience was not just a great opportunity for professional development, but a pivotal moment that has significantly fueled my passion for HEOR.
My role as an intern was multifaceted, offering me a unique opportunity to dive into the world of pharmaceuticals and health economics. One of my key responsibilities was to work on a capstone project that explored the feasibility of incorporating social determinants of health into clinical trials. This task was not only intellectually stimulating but also socially significant, as it aimed to understand the impact of these determinants on patient outcomes. The project opened my eyes to the complex relationship between societal factors and healthcare, reinforcing the importance of holistic approaches in medical research. This task required me to perform extensive literature reviews, analyze data meticulously, and synthesize research findings into comprehensive deliverables such as an abstract and presentation. I’m excited to present my capstone project findings at AMCP Annual this April in New Orleans.
Improving my understanding of HEOR strategy was a goal I had during this internship. I significantly developed this through specific tasks such as creating value stories to support Genentech products and participating in weekly AMCP Foundation journal clubs. When crafting value stories, I learned to align research findings with the strategic objectives of Genentech, showcasing how our products could meet the evolving needs in healthcare. This process not only honed my analytical skills but also taught me how to position research in a way that positively influences healthcare decisions and policies effectively. Meanwhile, the AMCP Foundation journal clubs provided a regular forum for discussing research and its applications in real-world settings. These discussions were crucial in shaping my ability to view research from a high-level perspective, enabling me to understand and evaluate the wider impact of our findings on healthcare policy and patient outcomes.
Beyond the skills and knowledge, my internship was a memorable journey of personal and professional growth. It was an environment that nurtured curiosity, encouraged innovation, and fostered a deep sense of purpose. The experience has solidified my commitment to the field of HEOR and continues to inspire me as I advance in my career.
I would like to extend a special thanks to my preceptors, Ibrahim Abbass and Pattie Strong, for their invaluable guidance and mentorship throughout this journey. A heartfelt thank you to Ebony Clay for her unwavering support during my internship. Lastly, my sincere appreciation goes to Genentech and the AMCP Foundation for sponsoring this incredible opportunity. The experience and connections I have gained are treasures that I will carry with me throughout my career.
